Nusrat Faizullah works with emerging and established organisations to support them to tackle social issues and systemic injustice. Her work focuses on: understanding and disrupting power; creating a more identity informed system; and nurturing leadership.

POWER

In order to tackle inequality Nusrat supports those she works with to look at what lies beneath it. She works with organisation to view how power manifests and accumulates within systems so that they understand how to disrupt power in order to make change. Her work involves unveiling the currencies and games within power structures and then looking at ways in which they can be “hacked” or challenged.

When we began our action inquiry into power we had to change so much. We had to change the entirety of how we viewed our place in the systems we were trying to shift. Nusrat took us through a journey that held both our anxiety and our compass. She challenged us to challenge ourselves- our assumptions, our prejudices and, of course, our power. The funny thing is that it all seems so obvious now (though it didn’t at the time) and that is testament to the lasting effect Nusrat’s approach has had.

IDENTITY

At the heart of Nusrat’s work is a deep understanding of identity and what is required to design programmes and develop strategies that are truly inclusive.  Using an intersectional lens Nusrat works with organizations to understand the complexities of identity using her experience around gender, race, ethnicity, class, refugees, faith, sexuality and lived exeprience to support them to take an identity informed approach.

Nusrat has been supporting the work we have been doing at The National Lottery Community Fund on developing a funding pilot programme that support Leaders with Lived Experience. Nusrat’s challenge and support has helped us to develop a truly co-produced programme. She has helped us to really question why we are doing things and helped us think about them differently so we can recognise where we can devolve power out to the communities we are working with.
